SRP Week 7

Book:  The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

My dad read this book and introduced it to me. It's an epic fantasy about Rand Al'Thor trying to aid in a war against a dark spirit and its minions. There are many detailed descriptions to help you visualize the complicated situations.

What does your friend need to know in order to read this book?

It's the first in a 12 or 13 adult book series. Once you get hooked, it will take you a long time to finish, but well worth it.

Book:  Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

It was a great book, full of mystery, magic, action and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. Artemis starts out as a 12 year Irish criminal mastermind, stealing money and valuables. Then he starts dabbling in magic... And finds a whole colony of fairies, centaurs with far more advanced technology, goblins and many more races. But he faces his biggest challenge when he tries to steal fairy gold...

What does your friend need to know in order to read this book?

You need to be sophisticated and have a love for adventure.

Book:  Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

This book is a true story, a diary, that, like Anne Franks, accompanied the subject, Alice, through multiple hardships she went through during a period in her teen years. It's a book more for 10-12th grade because of it's drug and sex references, but any mature person can enjoy it because it relates to anyone, whether you live in an upperclass family mansion or only have $5 to your name. The book gives you a look into the struggles of a person your age and there's never an anticlimactic moment.

Book:  Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

So we've all heard of the Twilight series. It's enormously popular. How could you not? So I decided to read it for myself. I'm reviewing the last one because it really struck me. I think this book is terrible. The writing is extremely repetitive. It must describe Edward's "cold", "marble" skin, his "topaz" eyes, how enormously perfect looking he is in every way, at least a dozen times. Also, the characters are flat. Edward's handsome, Alice likes shopping, Bella's clumsy, Emmet's strong, et cetera. There's no depth whatsoever to the characters. There's no plot. It's predictable. It's badly written. It's just stupid. Read it if you want, but don't expect literature.

What does your friend need to know in order to read this book?

Well, it's fairly important you read the rest of the series before reading this. It'll explain quite a bit. If you've read the first three (Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse), you'll understand (though not necessarily enjoy) Breaking Dawn more.

Book:  The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

I thought this book was good because it had a well-written storyline. It was fun to read. I found the modernization of classic Greek myths both amusing and clever. It was full of action, but at the same time, it was very funny. It was really well written, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who like adventure stories, Greek mythology or just likes a quick read. It was a bit of all three.

What does your friend need to know in order to read this book?

It helps to have a basic understanding of Greek mythology to read this book, but it's not absolutely vital. It'll just enhance your appreciation of this book a bit more. This is also part of a series, so if you read the books before it, the characters and storyline will be a bit more comprehensive. However, there is a brief summary at the beginning, so that too isn't completely necessary.
